“The Little Maid” for the book Dear Divine Daughter

I don’t think I ever noticed this little girl in the story of naaman before I was asked to make this illustration. So it was a pleasure to learn there was something I had overlooked!

This little maid was taken from her home and set to work by naamans wife as a servant/slave. When naaman is sick, she tells his wife that naaman should go see the prophet. He does does and is healed when he finishes bathing in the river Jordan at the prophets direction.

I wanted my depiction of her to be standing in front of the river, almost like she is leading him to the water. She was probably not there, so really it’s just symbolic. I also really wanted to use this bright teal, because it’s young and youthful.

I’m not sure I will ever understand her willingness to be caring and compassionate to the people who took her from her home and enslaved her, but it is really remarkable. I’m sure I would not have been as gracious at any age.

I love the idea of this man listening to this little maid’s ideas though, he up and moved his entire army on the word of a little girl.

May we be gracious to those who have wronged us, and may we always listen to little girls.
